What Is a Sub-Base, and Why Does It Matter More Than the Surface on Top?

Ask most people what makes a good driveway, and they’ll talk about the paving, the block colour or the finish. NWTH gets it; that’s the bit you actually see. But everything about how that driveway performs in five, ten or twenty years comes down to something you’ll never lay eyes on again once it’s covered over: the sub-base.

Think of it a bit like a mattress under a bedsheet. The sheet looks nice, but if what’s underneath is lumpy, saggy or badly put together, you’re going to feel every flaw eventually. A driveway works the same way.

What actually is a sub-base?

A sub-base is the compacted layer of aggregate laid beneath whatever surface finish is going on top, whether that’s block paving, tarmac, concrete or gravel. It’s usually made from crushed stone, most commonly MOT Type 1, and its job is to spread load evenly, resist water and stop the ground beneath from moving.

Without it, you’re essentially building on soil, and soil moves. It compresses under weight, shifts with moisture and doesn’t offer anything close to the stability that a properly laid sub-base provides.

Why it matters more than the surface finish

Here’s the uncomfortable truth for anyone tempted to cut costs on the bit nobody sees: a beautiful surface laid on a poor sub-base will fail. It doesn’t matter how good the paving or tarmac is; if what’s underneath can’t hold its shape, cracks appear, dips form, and water starts pooling in places it shouldn’t.

A well-specified sub-base, on the other hand, does its job quietly for decades. Nobody notices it because nothing goes wrong.

Getting the depth and material right

Depth depends on what’s going on top and what kind of traffic the area needs to handle. A garden path needs far less than a driveway taking regular car use, and areas handling heavier vehicles need more again. Getting this wrong in either direction either wastes money on unnecessary material or leaves you with a base that won’t hold up.
