Screened Top Soil (BS3882)
Where presentation and plant performance matter in equal measure, screened topsoil gives you the clean, consistent material that makes both possible.

It starts with the same natural material as dug topsoil, the difference is in what gets taken out. Screened Top Soil goes through a more thorough processing stage than As Dug Top Soil, passing through screening equipment that removes stones, roots, clumps and finer debris to produce a clean, consistent material with a uniform texture throughout. The result is a topsoil that's noticeably more refined in appearance and behaviour — easier to spread, more consistent to work with and better suited to applications where the finish matters as much as the function.
Like As Dug Top Soil, it's produced in compliance with BS3882, the British Standard that sets out the quality requirements for topsoil in terms of pH, organic matter, texture and contamination levels. That certification means you're working with a material that has been tested and verified rather than simply described as good quality by whoever is supplying it.
Where Does It Get Specified?
Anywhere the quality of the topsoil directly affects the quality of the finished result. Premium landscaping schemes are the most obvious home for screened topsoil. When a landscape architect or contractor is establishing high-quality planting beds, laying turf to a fine finish or preparing ground for a formal garden scheme, the consistency and cleanliness of the topsoil has a direct bearing on how the finished project looks and performs. Stones and debris in the surface layer cause problems during preparation and affect the evenness of the finished surface in ways that are difficult to correct after the fact.
New build housing is another significant application. Developers reinstating garden areas on completed plots need a topsoil that performs consistently across a large number of individual gardens, establishing quickly and supporting healthy growth without the variability that can come from less carefully processed material. Screened topsoil provides that consistency in a way that as dug material doesn't always match.
Sports surfaces, school grounds and public realm landscaping projects also regularly specify screened topsoil where a uniform, stone-free growing medium is part of the brief.
The Role of Drainage in Topsoil Performance
One of the less discussed aspects of topsoil quality is how it handles water. A well-structured screened topsoil with the right balance of texture and organic matter allows water to drain through it at a rate that keeps roots healthy without waterlogging. Poor quality or heavily compacted topsoil, by contrast, can retain water in ways that damage plant root systems and lead to the kind of patchy, struggling growth that takes seasons to diagnose correctly.
Screened Top Soil (BS3882) is processed to maintain the structural integrity that supports both drainage and root development, which is part of what the standard is designed to guarantee. For landscaping projects where long-term plant performance matters, that balance of drainage and nutrition is as important as the visual finish of the surface layer.

As an experienced recycled aggregate supplier, we can also offer a range of other materials, including:

WSA 3mm Washed Grit Sand
A fine, clean, washed grit sand with particle sizes up to 3mm. Ideal for general construction purposes, particularly for bedding paving slabs and block paving. It offers excellent drainage and is also used for plastering and rendering applications.

WSA 5mm – 10mm Pipe Bedding
A medium-sized aggregate, washed and screened, suitable for use as bedding material in pipe laying projects. The 5mm to 10mm grading ensures optimal support and drainage around underground pipes, reducing the risk of movement or damage.

WSA 10mm – 20mm Pipe Bedding
Larger-sized washed aggregate for pipe bedding, offering enhanced drainage and structural support. The 10mm to 20mm grading is particularly suited for larger drainage and utility pipe systems, providing stability and preventing soil infiltration.

WSA 20mm – 40mm Washed Filter Media
A coarser washed aggregate used as a filter media for water management systems, ensuring efficient drainage. The 20mm to 40mm particle size makes it perfect for land drainage, soakaways, and filtration projects.

WSA 40mm - 75mm Washed Filter Media
A larger-sized washed aggregate designed for filtration and drainage applications, such as in large-scale soakaways or land drainage systems. Its size range between 40mm and 75mm ensures free drainage while preventing the clogging of water systems.

Puddle Clay
A natural clay material, typically used to create watertight barriers. It is ideal for use in ponds, lakes, and canal construction, preventing water seepage due to its low permeability. Puddle clay is also employed in landfill sites as part of the liner system.

MOT Type 1 Sub Base
A widely used sub-base material made from crushed stone or gravel, with particles ranging up to 40mm. MOT Type 1 is commonly used in the construction of roads, driveways, and paths due to its strength and load-bearing properties. It forms a stable, compacted foundation layer that can support heavy traffic.

As Dug Top Soil (BS3882)
A natural topsoil, taken directly from site and screened for larger debris, compliant with BS3882 standards. It provides a nutrient-rich medium for landscaping and general gardening purposes, supporting healthy plant growth.

6F2 Crushed Hardcore
A recycled aggregate consisting of crushed concrete, brick, and stone, used in construction as a bulk fill material. 6F2 is typically used for road base layers, foundations, and general groundwork, providing a strong and durable sub-base.
