Puddle Clay
When a structure needs to hold water rather than drain it, puddle clay has been the material of choice for engineers and contractors for centuries.

Puddle clay is a natural clay material with exceptionally low permeability, meaning water passes through it at a negligible rate. That single characteristic is what makes it so valuable in construction contexts where containing water is the objective rather than dispersing it. It's been used in waterproofing applications for centuries, canal construction in the UK relied heavily on it long before modern synthetic liner systems existed, and it remains a trusted and widely specified material today.
The term "puddling" refers to the process of working the clay to remove air pockets and improve its waterproofing properties. When correctly prepared and applied, it forms a dense, cohesive barrier that water simply cannot penetrate at any meaningful rate. It's a natural product doing a very specific job, and for many applications it does that job as well as anything else on the market.
Typical Applications
For garden ponds, ornamental lakes and larger water features, puddle clay is a popular lining choice precisely because it's natural, durable and integrates well with the surrounding environment. Unlike synthetic liners it won't degrade, puncture or require replacement, and it supports aquatic plant life in a way that artificial materials don't.
Canal construction and restoration is another significant application. Much of the UK's historic canal network was originally sealed with puddle clay, and restoration projects regularly specify it to maintain authenticity and performance in line with the original construction method.
Landfill sites represent a more industrial application but one where puddle clay's properties are equally important. As part of a liner system, it forms a barrier that prevents leachate, contaminated liquid produced by decomposing waste, from migrating into the surrounding ground and water table. In that context it's not just a performance requirement but an environmental and regulatory one.
A Few Practical Points Worth Knowing
Puddle clay needs to be applied correctly to perform as intended. It should be laid in compacted layers, kept moist during installation and protected from drying out or freezing before the structure is filled with water. If it dries and cracks before the pond or canal is operational, the waterproofing integrity is compromised and the material needs to be reworked. It's not a complicated process, but it does require attention at the installation stage.
The volume required for a given project depends on the surface area being lined and the depth of clay specified — typically a minimum of 300mm compacted depth for most pond and lake applications, though engineered schemes may call for more. If you're not sure how much you need, it's worth working that out carefully before ordering.

As an experienced recycled aggregate supplier, we can also offer a range of other materials, including:

WSA 3mm Washed Grit Sand
A fine, clean, washed grit sand with particle sizes up to 3mm. Ideal for general construction purposes, particularly for bedding paving slabs and block paving. It offers excellent drainage and is also used for plastering and rendering applications.

WSA 5mm – 10mm Pipe Bedding
A medium-sized aggregate, washed and screened, suitable for use as bedding material in pipe laying projects. The 5mm to 10mm grading ensures optimal support and drainage around underground pipes, reducing the risk of movement or damage.

WSA 10mm – 20mm Pipe Bedding
Larger-sized washed aggregate for pipe bedding, offering enhanced drainage and structural support. The 10mm to 20mm grading is particularly suited for larger drainage and utility pipe systems, providing stability and preventing soil infiltration.

WSA 20mm – 40mm Washed Filter Media
A coarser washed aggregate used as a filter media for water management systems, ensuring efficient drainage. The 20mm to 40mm particle size makes it perfect for land drainage, soakaways, and filtration projects.

WSA 40mm - 75mm Washed Filter Media
A larger-sized washed aggregate designed for filtration and drainage applications, such as in large-scale soakaways or land drainage systems. Its size range between 40mm and 75mm ensures free drainage while preventing the clogging of water systems.

MOT Type 1 Sub Base
A widely used sub-base material made from crushed stone or gravel, with particles ranging up to 40mm. MOT Type 1 is commonly used in the construction of roads, driveways, and paths due to its strength and load-bearing properties. It forms a stable, compacted foundation layer that can support heavy traffic.

As Dug Top Soil (BS3882)
A natural topsoil, taken directly from site and screened for larger debris, compliant with BS3882 standards. It provides a nutrient-rich medium for landscaping and general gardening purposes, supporting healthy plant growth.

Screened Top Soil (BS3882)
High-quality, screened topsoil that meets the BS3882 standard for multi-purpose use. It is free from stones and debris, making it suitable for a variety of landscaping and garden projects. It promotes excellent drainage and plant growth due to its balanced texture and nutrient content.

6F2 Crushed Hardcore
A recycled aggregate consisting of crushed concrete, brick, and stone, used in construction as a bulk fill material. 6F2 is typically used for road base layers, foundations, and general groundwork, providing a strong and durable sub-base.
