WSA 20mm, 40mm is a washed recycled aggregate sitting at the coarser end of the filter media range. The particle size, nothing below 20mm, nothing above 40mm, creates a material with a high void ratio, meaning water can move through it freely and at volume without the kind of restriction you'd get from a finer aggregate. That's precisely the property you need in a filter media application, where the job of the aggregate is to allow water to pass through efficiently while preventing the surrounding soil or fines from migrating into and clogging the system.

Where Does It Get Used?

Soakaways are another common application, the aggregate surrounds the soakaway structure and allows water to disperse into the surrounding ground at a controlled rate.
Filtration projects more broadly also call for this material, particularly where a coarser filter layer sits above or around finer drainage infrastructure. In those situations, the WSA 20mm – 40mm acts as a buffer zone, allowing water through while keeping the finer layers of the system intact and functioning as designed. How Does It Sit Within the WSA Filter Media Range?
The WSA filter media range runs from the finer 3mm washed grit sand through to the larger 40mm - 75mm washed filter media. WSA 20mm - 40mm sits in the middle of that range, offering greater flow capacity than the smaller pipe bedding aggregates while remaining more manageable than the coarsest filter media option. For most standard land drainage and soakaway applications, it hits the right balance between void ratio and structural stability within the drainage layer.
