What Is Sharp Sand Used For?
Concrete mixes are where most people first encounter sharp sand. It's a core ingredient in standard concrete and its coarseness contributes to the bulk and strength that the mix needs to set firmly and perform under load. The balance of sand, cement and water matters a great deal in concrete, and sharp sand is the type that gives you the right properties to work with.
Floor screeding is another common application. A well-mixed screed using sharp sand dries evenly, resists cracking and gives you the solid, level surface you need before laying tiles, fitting underfloor heating or finishing a floor in any other way. It's also the standard choice for bedding beneath block paving, where the material needs to hold everything firmly in position once vehicles or foot traffic start using the surface. Across all of these uses, the common thread is that sharp sand is doing a structural job, not just filling space.
Sharp Sand or Building Sand, Which Do You Actually Need?
The two look similar enough that people occasionally pick up the wrong one, particularly when buying in bags rather than bulk. Building sand is softer and finer, which makes it well suited to mortar, brickwork and pointing jobs where workability and a smooth finish matter more than load-bearing strength. Sharp sand is the one you want when the material needs to perform structurally.
As a general guide, concrete, screeding and block paving bedding all call for sharp sand. Brickwork and pointing are more likely to need building sand. If your project sits somewhere in between or you're genuinely not sure, it's worth a quick conversation before placing an order. We'd rather you get the right material first time than have to sort out a problem further down the line.
As an experienced aggregate supplier, we can also offer a range of other materials, including:
