MOT Type 3

For projects where water management is part of the design, MOT Type 3 is the sub-base material that makes it all work

MOT Type 3 is a permeable sub-base aggregate made from crushed stone and recycled materials, graded specifically to allow water to pass through it rather than pool on the surface above. It's sometimes referred to as "reduced fines," which points to the key difference between it and MOT Type 1. The finer particles that give Type 1 its dense, load-bearing compaction have largely been removed from Type 3, and that's intentional. What you're left with is a material that still provides a stable, reliable sub-base but allows water to drain freely downward through the layers beneath your surface.

Where Does It Tend to Get Used?

MOT Type 3 was developed primarily for use in Sustainable Drainage Systems, or SuDS, an approach to managing rainwater that tries to replicate natural drainage rather than simply redirecting water into overloaded drainage infrastructure. Permeable driveways are probably the most familiar residential example, but the material appears across a wide range of commercial and civil applications wherever water management has been built into the design from the start.

Permeable block paving is one of the most common uses, both on domestic driveways and in larger car parks and commercial yards. It also turns up in road construction, public realm projects and new housing developments where SuDS compliance is written into the planning conditions. That last point is worth paying attention to, planning authorities across the UK are increasingly requiring permeable surfacing solutions for new driveways, particularly where a property fronts onto a public road. In those situations, MOT Type 3 isn't really optional.

Type 1 or Type 3, How Do You Choose?

For most standard driveways, roads and hard standings where drainage isn't a specific design requirement, MOT Type 1 remains the default choice. It compacts densely, carries load well and is well understood across the industry. MOT Type 3 comes into its own when permeability is the priority, whether that's driven by planning conditions, a SuDS specification or simply a site where surface water runoff is a known problem that needs addressing at sub-base level.

If you're not certain which material suits your project, it's worth having a conversation before you order. The right call at sub-base stage saves a lot of trouble later. Reach us on 01606 663816 or get in touch through the contact form and we'll give you a straightforward answer.
