On a busy construction site, a poorly timed aggregate delivery can cause as many problems as a late one. When vehicles arrive during the wrong phase of the programme, access is blocked, materials end up stored in the wrong place and the knock-on effect can ripple through the schedule in ways that take days to unpick. Getting bulk deliveries right is as much about planning as it is about finding a reliable aggregates supplier.
The starting point is understanding exactly when each material is needed relative to the programme. Aggregates required for sub-base work need to be on site before the groundworks team is ready to lay them, not the morning they start. Ordering too early creates storage problems and potential contamination if materials are left exposed in the wrong conditions. Ordering too late puts the whole operation on hold. Working backwards from each key programme milestone and building in a sensible lead time is the most reliable way to avoid both of those problems.
Site access is the other variable that catches people out. Larger aggregate deliveries typically involve articulated lorries or 8-wheeler tippers, and not every site can accommodate those vehicles at every stage of the build. Soft ground, restricted entry points, overhead obstructions and other contractors working in the same area all affect where and when a delivery vehicle can safely operate. Talking through access logistics with your aggregates supplier before the order is placed, rather than on the morning of delivery, avoids the kind of standoffs that waste everybody’s time.
Sequencing matters on phased developments in particular. If different areas of a site are at different stages, deliveries need to be coordinated so that materials arrive at the right part of the site at the right time. A single large order that dumps everything in one location sounds efficient until you’re moving material twice because it’s in the way of the next phase.
Communication between the site team and the supplier throughout the project is what holds all of this together. Programmes change, ground conditions shift and priorities get reorganised. A supplier who can respond to those changes quickly and without fuss is worth more than one who simply takes an order and turns up on a fixed date regardless of what’s happening on the ground.
